Un Encuentro: Theater of the Borderlands/Teatro de la frontera

A new biennial, bilingual, and transnational theater festival

Borderlands Theater announces partnership with El Círculo Teatral of Mexico City to co-produce Un Encuentro: Theater of the Borderlands/Teatro de la frontera. This new biennial, bilingual, and transnational festival will engage audiences on both sides of the border through new play commissions and development, as well as staged productions, play readings, and public forums in both countries.

Un Encuentro: Theater of the Borderlands/Teatro de la frontera is an initiative dedicated to cultivating artistic and cultural conversations, collaborations, and exchanges between Tucson, Mexico City, and beyond.  The program will bring together a wide array of theater artists of varying backgrounds to engage and reflect upon theater practices, social justice themes, audience engagement, and our connection to the borderlands—geographic, sociocultural, linguistic, or metaphorical in nature. Through co-producing events in Tucson and Mexico City, hosting international artists in residence, and facilitating dialogue between the communities, this ongoing project will extend Borderlands’ capacity to engage audiences with exciting and innovative works with a global perspective.

The festival’s transnational creative team features Barclay Goldsmith (curator and producing director) and Eva Zorrilla Tessler (translator and associate producer) of Borderlands Theater; Víctor Carpintiero (associate partner) and Alberto Estrella (associate producer) of El Círculo Teatral; Luisa Huertas (advisor) of the National Theater of Mexico and El Centro de Estudios para el Uso de la Voz; and Catherine María Rodríguez (new play dramaturg and festival archivist).
